WILANÓW and its history
The royal district of Warsaw
Milanowo is the original name of the area where Wilanów is located today, but the name of the district probably derives from Villa Nova, the name, of a manor house bought by the Polish King John III Sobieski. The site was to become a royal summer residence, separated from the hustle and bustle of Warsaw at the time. The Wilanów Palace was designed by the architect Augustin Locci and attracted attention not only with its Baroque architecture, but also with its beautiful French-style gardens. After the death of King Sobieski, Wilanów went through various ownership changes until it was finally purchased by the Potocki family in 1720. In the hands of this family, Wilanów remained until the partitions of Poland.
In the 19th century, Wilanów underwent further transformations, including the expansion of the Palace and changes to the surrounding gardens. In the interwar period, Wilanów became part of Warsaw, and after the Second World War, when Poland became a socialist state, the Wilanów Palace and the surrounding grounds were used for various purposes, including as a research facility or a cultural centre.
After the political transformation in Poland in 1989, the district gradually began to regain its former glory. The Wilanów Palace was restored, the gardens were restored to their original shape, and the district began to develop and become an ideal place to live. Modern housing developments, preservation of historical heritage and care for green areas have made Wilanów one of the most prestigious districts in Warsaw, attracting both residents and tourists. Today, Wilanów is not only history, but also a dynamically developing part of the capital, combining tradition with modernity.
